Conference of the Finnish Anthropological Society

Permeable Worlds: Bodies, Places, and Motilities

University of Oulu
14.6.2027–16.6.2027

Call for Panels

The 2027 Biennial Conference of the Finnish Anthropological Society will be held at the University of Oulu, a significant centre for Arctic and environmental research. The conference explores how worlds are made and remade over time, focusing on bodies, places, and motilities (the embodied capacity, ability, desire, or refusal to move) as relational and temporal processes that shape (im)permeable worlds. The theme invites reflection on ongoing social and ecological transformations at the intersection of the anthropology of mobility and migration with environmental, political, feminist, Indigenous, and multispecies anthropology. It also encourages dialogue with archaeology, history, human geography, and environmental humanities.

Three keynote speakers will guide these explorations. Professor Ciara Kierans (Aarhus University) studies filtration and environmental health, advancing relational approaches to landscapes, infrastructures, and multispecies assemblages. Professor Shahram Khosravi (Stockholm University) draws on scholarship on borders, displacement, and embodied mobility to critically interrogate regimes of movement and immobility. Sigga-Marja Magga (University of Oulu) works on duodji, Sámi cultural heritage, and research ethics, foregrounding relationality and Indigenous self-determination.

We warmly invite proposals for panels, workshops, and roundtables in conventional or multimodal formats or ethnographic film sessions that engage with the conference theme. We also welcome contributions addressing broader questions and developments in Finnish anthropology. Submissions are welcome to propose panels that may be either closed, with participants agreed in advance, or open, with individual contributions invited through the conference call. Panels can be either in English or Finnish. Each session is 90 minutes long. Conventional paper panels may include up to five papers. All proposed formats may be allocated up to two 90-minute sessions.
